I was hired in May of 2017 by Georgia Military College, a liberal arts junior college serving traditional attending students as well as a vast online campus. I taught Biology 123 and 124 (equivalent to 101 and 103) during the summer and fall. I most enjoyed the smaller class size relative to what I was accustomed to. It certainly makes the dissections (the pictures below that undoubtedly caught your eye before the text did) go much smoother. It also makes for easier class discussions and teacher-student interactions.

The most challenging part of teaching here is the way that the terms are set. GMC goes by the quarter system, which at the time I was was not familiar with. Essentially, it is two semesters in one, with two 7-week quarters in fall and spring, and one 7-week quarter in summer. After two quarters with GMC, I have quickly adjusted to the system and rather enjoy it. The quarter setup allows for enhanced interactions with my students. I get to know them personally and develop a rapport with them as the quarter goes on. I feel like this had led to more engagement and heightened interest in the subject matter, even though these are non-majors courses. This is reflected in the overall grades, which are generally good, which reflects content comprehension and knowledge retention. Due to a move in January 2018, I am no longer at the physical campus in Columbus, Georgia. But I am now teaching Biology 211, the introductory course for biology majors, for the online campus. The second quarter of fall 2020 (and my 10th!) is in full swing, and I look forward to many more! I will adjust this section with new developments as I receive them.
